The Problem with Christina’s Image

May 29, 2010 at 1:47 pm (music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Genie in a Bottle [US] by Christina Aguilera cover

Although Christina  Aguilera is on of the best  singers ever and has a diva attitude she was never a pop star on the level of  Britney Spears or Madonna. Her  most success came from her hits in the 90s and her bubble gum pop image, which she quickly discarded in favor of a less mainstream image. She immediately went from bubble gum pop to Stripped calling herself Xtina and dirty. While her music was still  good it wasn’t mainstream anymore. It’s the same when she went Back to the Basics the sound was too jazzy for mainstream pop. And really she almost sings too well for mainstream is not usually the place of the best music anyways.

Now with Bionic Christina wants to be mainstream pop and she hasn’t been for years. And its been a while since her last album, 2006. She seems to be struggling to get back into the game, assuming people will listen and like her music because after all she is Christina Aguilera. Problem is Bionic is the first time in a long time she wanted to really be mainstream and she’s doing electropop, a genre in which you don’t really need a great voice, it kind of trivializes the need for one as pop does anyways.  In pop catchy matters more than if its good.

Her other problem is a female artist of the same genre who Christina has never said her name, Lady Gaga who is currently the queen of electro-pop.  She has made the mistake of paying her little mind as a threat and yet wearing things Gaga’s already worn and making vids that seem a little familar with either Madonna or Lady Gaga.  It isn’t that she’s copying Gaga and even if she was it really wouldn’t be a huge deal with she didn’t diss her and hadn’t transformed her image and style at the same time as Gaga.  I mean Rihanna has walked out wearing clothes Gaga’s worn but no one cared and other artists have done similar music but people didn’t really care all that much either.  Its that Christina’s image and music have suddenly become similar. Yeah she sings better, but pop isn’t about that or about loyalty and I don’t think she gets that.  She just gets how to make good songs.

It actually isn’t all that suprising she’s had to cancel her tour sadly.  I had been looking forward to this album.  I wanted to hear Christina’s electro-pop. I like Not myself tonight, but I’m not a huge fan of the vid, it kind of bored me. There was no meaning to anything, no faux storyline. There wasn’t really a point to anything done in the vid unless it was to be sexy or pay homage to Madonna. I’m not sure how good the rest of the album is Woo Hoo is kind of a disappointment and the other songs I heard are ok and Not Myself Tonight only made it to number 23, probably because of all this drama which made her makeover fail and the boring vid.

I worry that Christina needs to have some one tell her not to do stuff like wear things Gaga’s worn in public or in music vids, but because she is Christina, she can do what she wants and I fear that may be messing up her career. I’ve heard  that she likes to over sing (I think she does sometimes especially if she’s going to do pop pop) and when people warn her about that she doesn’t listen to them.

Yeah these pics are similar, same shades in Not Myself Tonight as Bad Romance. But it could have turned out differently if she acknowledged Gaga. Because at first people were saying Gaga looks like Christina, although they were also saying Christina looked better and at that time she did, now I can’t say who looks better.

With Christina people always want to start stuff. Remember when they were pitting her against Britney Spears?   Like the radio will play Lady Gaga either right after or before Christina and say how people are saying Christina’s copying her. I think its a load of BS. Pop needs to stuff compared female artists to the point they can’t sell their music. But who’s going to do that when drama’s interesting?

The Apocalypse on Tour!

April 21, 2010 at 11:03 pm (music, pop culture, Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

The snowacalpse,  snowmeggedon, earthquakes, and that one particular volcano’ s probably got a lot of people thinking its the end of the world.  Movies like 2012 and the growing fear people in the US are showing towards the government aren’t helping matters.  At least we’re no longer having a financial meltdown and the economy’s supposedly getting better.  2010 has been particularly busy.

But I’m not going to talk about those things anymore. Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball tour and Rihanna’s Last Girl on Earth Tour both herald the end.  Not to start any new conspiracy theories.  There are enough of those flying around.  But does this pic of Gaga remind you of something quite scary or is it just me? She’s even got horns on that mask. Gaga had her little monster’s making apocalyptic videos for the first leg of her tour.  Here’s one particularly good one:

The second leg may not be the apocalypse anymore, but it still has monsters. I’m looking forward to the Monster Ball.

As for Rihanna her whole gig seems to be the end, last girl on earth. How could that not be the end.  And with songs like Fire Bomb, Hard, and Mad House you’d think the whole world’s gone to pieces and only crazy, tough people remain. I’m curious how she’s got her concert planned out. And with Ke$ha opening I know she’s going to have a wild crowd. Too bad Nicki Minaj’s not doing the tour that would have been even more crazy.  People are going to be hype coming out of the show.

Anyone going to the Monster Ball or Last Girl on Earth Tour? And what do you think about all this about the apocalypse?

Monster Ball Tour

October 16, 2009 at 11:44 am (art, fashion, music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Lady Gaga Announces 'The Monster Ball'

I’ve been talking about Lady Gaga a lot recently, but hey she’s about to release the Fame Monster (sounds kind of scary huh?) and doing awesome things like starting the “first ever pop-electro opera,”  the Monster Ball.  She’s recently released the poster for her tour (without Kanye West).  She announce that her opening is  to be none other than Kid Cudi.  I guess she wanted a quirky rapper to go on tour with her or one of the rappers from the I make her say”I poke her face” song which also included Kanye and Common.  I do like Kid Cudi although I’m not a fan of this song.  I just think its stupid.  I like his song Day N Nite and how the vid includes The Wizard of Oz and Prince references and how half of the vid is a cartoon. What do you think of Kid Cudi going on  tour with Lady Gaga?

Do you like the Monster Ball poster?  I love it.   It looks really modelly (that’s not a word). She’s wearing the awesomeness she premiered on SNL.

Make sure you don’t confuse the name of the tour with the movie Monster’s Ball starring Halle Berry.  They have nothing in common except the name, as far as I know.

The tour sounds exciting.  I want to go.  What about you?

Kanye+Gaga tour died

October 1, 2009 at 7:34 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , )

Crazy stuff’s flying around about the Kanye+Gaga tour and the tour’s not until November.  50 cent has been record calling the tour a “gay tour”

Lady Gaga has said that she is going to turn the world gay.  Thing is Kanye is on tour with her and he has problems with people calling him gay and has even been made fun of on Southpark for this being called gay fish.  50 might have just been aware of this or he could have just been being mean.  I know he’s had a beef with Kanye ever since the VMAs so it was must likely the 2nd of the two reasons.

Well the tour’s not going on though… Kinda sad. Guess they don’t know if Kanye’s going to jail for that assault he did earlier. I thought it would be a good tour whether or not Kanye is a gay fish.  Gaga and Kanye’s music does mesh well.  Fame does kill.  Especially if you achieved it through outburst it seems.  So the Kanye+Gaga Fame Kills tour died.

What do you think about all this?

Rocking German Bands

September 20, 2009 at 10:04 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Lately I’ve noticed a good number of German bands trying to make it in America.  The problem with a lot of bands trying to make it here is the accent and language.  Americans want to listen to their songs in English and don’t want it to sound foreign.  The countries that do the best with sending there music here are of course England and then Sweden.   There have been German bands such as The Scorpions who have made it big in America, but not many.  I would like to have more make it.  Here are a few that are making an attempt, as far as I can see.

Cinema Bizarre love songs (they kill me)  An anime inspired band that opened for Lady Gaga during her Fame Ball Tour.

Polarkreis 18  allein allein, the colour of snow  In the process of releasing their first album in America.

Tokio Hotel monsoon Had an English language album released and won some awards over here.

I also like oomph, enomine, and rammstein, but I don’t think any of these groups are making moves here.  Besides these groups are older.

If you listen to German rock.  Who are some of your favorites and what do you think their chances of making in America are?
