This is Mortal Kombat!

June 20, 2010 at 6:43 pm (music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , )

Earlier I found Bubble Pop, the Rihanna song that uses music from the video game Streets of Rage.  Now I’ve found one using music from Mortal Kombat.  Seriously whats going on here? Singers playing video games and want to kick some ass or something? Nothing wrong with that, but really? These songs are so pop its ridiculous.

I feel like a Monster…Monster’s are taking over

June 2, 2010 at 7:35 pm (music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I was listening to Rihanna Distubia today and that line “I feel like a monster,” made me think. There has been a lot of monsters mentioned in music lately and the talk of monsters always reminds of that send in the Little Mermaid and all the poor unfortunate souls.  Does listening to music about monsters or being called a little monster make you think of those green things grabbing for anything they can hold on to or make you feel like them? Or is it just me?

Anyways besides Disturbia, there’s Monster by Lady Gaga on the Fame Monster and all all her fans are Little Monsters. Then Neyo just did a song called Beautiful monster. And I would say that’s a lot of monsters in pop music right now.

Then there’s the appearance of the Big Bad Wolf in Monster and Taio Cruz Break your Heart, would you say they were the same? But that’s another matter.

Boom Boom Pow!

May 9, 2010 at 1:23 pm (music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , )

Noticed all the Boom Boom Boom and Pow Pow Pow in songs?

Usher’s  OMG has pow pow pow and of course Will.i.am’s a part of it.  Rihanna’s Rude Boy got Boom Boom Boom which Will.i.am didn’t touch but he could have still influenced it considering how much he worked with Rihanna on her last album.

Is it too much Boom Boom Pow for you? And would you blame it on Will.i.am?

Makes you want to be a Zombie doesn’t it?

April 22, 2010 at 11:19 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Natalia Kills, a British-born Jamaican, is being compared to Lady Gaga and Rihanna.  I wouldn’t say she’s very Gagaish except that she says Space Cowboy just play that track which is also something Gaga has said and this one pic which kind of reminds me of a particular scene in Telephone in which Gaga wears the cigarette glasses. And like Gaga she works with Akon and Space Cowboy and is in Cherrytree records.  Ok I guess that’s a lot in common, but it still doesn’t make her Gagaish.

So far she seems far more like Rihanna in her Rated R phase. Zombie is a very dark track that starts off sounding like Mad House and she’s singing about being in love with a zombie for crying out loud its going to be dark. The  lyrics like ” Cold, cold, freezing, freezing Got my heart beating, beating” and  “Cause he chasing me nightlyAnd I want him to bite me” are disturbing enough to give you the creeps, but not to stop listening to the song.  The video reminds me of Russian Roulette and old video footage.  She kind of reminds me of Kanye with his videos Paranoid and Coldest Winter and his use of autotune. The over all effect of the song and video is a vintage horror movie with a rocking track.

Now enough with the comparisons. People do it too much, but really it can’t be helped.  A sound and image can call up similar sounds and images. The song’s good I think, but has a heavy use of autotune. I guess I have to wait to see how well she really sings. But Zombie’s a good start to the album Perfectionist that is scheduled for a 2010 release. With Zombie she shows crossover appeal to America, but we’ll have to wait and see. And her new single Activate My Heart seems good too.

The Apocalypse on Tour!

April 21, 2010 at 11:03 pm (music, pop culture, Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

The snowacalpse,  snowmeggedon, earthquakes, and that one particular volcano’ s probably got a lot of people thinking its the end of the world.  Movies like 2012 and the growing fear people in the US are showing towards the government aren’t helping matters.  At least we’re no longer having a financial meltdown and the economy’s supposedly getting better.  2010 has been particularly busy.

But I’m not going to talk about those things anymore. Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball tour and Rihanna’s Last Girl on Earth Tour both herald the end.  Not to start any new conspiracy theories.  There are enough of those flying around.  But does this pic of Gaga remind you of something quite scary or is it just me? She’s even got horns on that mask. Gaga had her little monster’s making apocalyptic videos for the first leg of her tour.  Here’s one particularly good one:

The second leg may not be the apocalypse anymore, but it still has monsters. I’m looking forward to the Monster Ball.

As for Rihanna her whole gig seems to be the end, last girl on earth. How could that not be the end.  And with songs like Fire Bomb, Hard, and Mad House you’d think the whole world’s gone to pieces and only crazy, tough people remain. I’m curious how she’s got her concert planned out. And with Ke$ha opening I know she’s going to have a wild crowd. Too bad Nicki Minaj’s not doing the tour that would have been even more crazy.  People are going to be hype coming out of the show.

Anyone going to the Monster Ball or Last Girl on Earth Tour? And what do you think about all this about the apocalypse?

Rihanna’s Streets of Rage

April 18, 2010 at 10:58 pm (music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Video games are making their way into pop music. Rihanna’s got the streets of rage beat going in the song Bubble Pop, an unreleased song off her Good Girl Gone Bad Album.  But since its streets of rage its got a strong connection to her Rated R Album.  And to think I didn’t think she was angry then.  Seems she wants to kick some ass.  Although the lyrics for this one are more similar to Gwen Stefani’s Bubble Pop Electric than the songs Rihanna sings on Rated R.  I kinda like this song

Here’s some footage from the game which has some pretty sweet music if you ask me:

Too bad the song falls in between Good Girl Gone Bad and Rated R.  Its good, but it didn’t fit on the album.  What do you think? Do you like the song?  And what do you think about using video game beats in pop music?

Who’s got Gaga’s brows?

February 18, 2010 at 12:23 pm (fashion) (, , , , , , )

Looks like Dakota Fanning and Rihanna have the same brows as Gaga.  What’s up with that?

Do you like these eyebrows? And seriously why am I talking about eyebrows? Because I didn’t realize that people copied eyebrows like they do clothes.  I think its kind of ridiculous.

Grammys ’10 Battle of the divas

February 1, 2010 at 7:06 pm (music, Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I saw the grammys last night and thought it was awesome and because of the amount of female artist dueling it out for supremcy thisgrammy was officially the Battle of the Divas.

Lady Gaga and Elton John’s opener did not disappoint.  It came complete with a fame factory, monsters, and a sacrifce.  Gaga was sent straight to the flames.  Wish Gaga won a grammy on air and not just the two she won before, but I’m not complaining.  She did win more than one grammy and some awesome artists have never won any like Diana Ross who never won any despite being nominated for 12.

Beyonce was awesome as ever.  She’s in a league of her own.  5 Grammy wins, 2 years in a row.  I think she’s the only female artist so far to accomplish that.  It must have been weird for her to watch Jayz accept that award with Rihanna and her (B’s) nephew. I wish Rihanna had been able to perform that would have been nice.

So glad Kanye wasn’t there.   Didn’t get to yell at Taylor Swift as she cleaned up awards, not as much as Beyonce, but still.  She got album of the year.  I knew she would, but I’m still mad.  Just because she’s cute and had Kanye do something horrid.  I think it should have gone to Gaga or Beyonce.  I did like seeing Taylor perform with Stevie Nicks.

There was mad pairing going on at the Grammys.  Lady Gaga and Elton John, Taylor Switft and Stevie Nicks, and Roberta Flack and Maxwell.  I haven’t seen or heard about Roberta in like forever where’d they find her? I know she’s older now, but boy did she look stiff, like she couldn’t bend her neck.  It looked kind of uncomfortable.

I guess because I don’t listen to country I didn’t realize the Zac Brown Band was such a big deal.  I was hoping for Keri Hilson or MGMT or even the Ting Tings.  Granted MGMT and the Tings Tings havent’ gotten the air time of either the Zac Brown Band or Keri Hilson.

The Michael Jackson tribute was good but sometimes all the voices didn’t harmonize or something.  Sometimes Usher sounded off.  And two American Idol ex-contestants (I would say winners, but Jennifer Hudson didn’t winner although she was definitely good enough to) out of like five people.  American Idol must be proud.   I love Earth song, but I kind of wonder how it was chosen.  It was like they wanted to do We are the World, but couldn’t get the rights (Maybe because the song is being redone).  And I wished I had those 3-D glasses.  I kind of forgot to get some before the big snow storm came in and by then it was too late.  I wasn’t going out into the snow.

Pink’s performance was stunning.  I still can’t figure out how she can do those acrobatics and sing. I think I just starred in awe.  Especially because of the song choice too and I know I wasn’t the only one starring.  Black eyed peas did well too and I liked Lady Antebellum’s song.  And Bon Jovi of course.

The rap it the end although good sucked bad because they cussed so much half the song was edited.  So I couldn’t hear much of it.

Overall I enjoyed the Grammy’s.  How about you?  Who would you like to have seen win Grammy’s?

Rihanna jagging Gaga’s style

January 22, 2010 at 11:54 am (commercial, fashion, music) (, , , , , , , )

Who wore it better? Lady GaGa vs. Rihanna

Rihanna we know you like Gaga’s clothing style, but at least usually there’s a difference.  Like you wear wear and spikes which Gaga’s not into.  But this time you practically wore the same outfit.  Its just a different color and you wore it after her to the same country she wore it in, Germany.  You should have at least worn it in a different country.  Especially since Lady Gaga wore it for a commercial.
