A rip off or the power of the chords?

April 29, 2011 at 1:31 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Everyone’s been ripping into Lady Gaga for copying Madonna’s Express Yourself for her song Born this Way.  Lady Gaga said the chord progression was similar because she used one from disco.  Which I suppose Madonna would have as well since there were grumblings of her stealing from The Staple Singers Respect Yourself. Fortunately for Madonna and unfortunately for Lady Gaga, Respect Yourself isn’t as mainstream as taking from Express Yourself.  But after seeing this vid I truly wonder how many sound combinations there are to make in music.  Especially since everyone from Journey to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Black Eyed Peas used the same four chords.

Gagavision & Fundamentalists

April 7, 2011 at 3:49 pm (pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Gaga brings back Gagavision after a long awaited interval.  Wondering about the song playing when she’s looking at the Get out of Hell free card? Its Ladytron Seventeen. Lady Gaga listens to Ladytron lol.

Ok so more importantly what good does a Get out of Hell free card do? Like does that give her a free license to do whatever she wants because if she was sent there she can get out? Thats a real smart fundamentalist for you… A fundamentalist protester once gave me a billion dollar bill which I’m definitely keeping because who wouldn’t want a billion dollar bill?

One Billion Dollar Bill

Whose the guy on the bill?  Maybe their leader? Who knows.

There’s a reason I haven’t been writing posts. I’ve been working on a website called Pop Mirror.  I’ve been doing a lot of art for the site.  Pop Mirror’s not made yet but you can get a taste of it on its facebook page.  http://on.fb.me/i5Qqej Its fame and pop culture shown through pop art.

Like the facebook page to see cartoons of celebs like Charlie Sheen and to say other ones you want to see.

And Previews of comics like Snow that will be on the site. Snow is a modern retelling of Snow White.  In this version Snow’s got more attitude than the Disney version. She’s  trying to just get through high school, but being who she is, she is surrounded by fameballs and the jealous eye of her stepmother

The cover of the Comic snowYou can ask for cartoons you want to see either at http://on.fb.me/i5Qqej or on twitter @Popmirror.

I feel like a Monster…Monster’s are taking over

June 2, 2010 at 7:35 pm (music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I was listening to Rihanna Distubia today and that line “I feel like a monster,” made me think. There has been a lot of monsters mentioned in music lately and the talk of monsters always reminds of that send in the Little Mermaid and all the poor unfortunate souls.  Does listening to music about monsters or being called a little monster make you think of those green things grabbing for anything they can hold on to or make you feel like them? Or is it just me?

Anyways besides Disturbia, there’s Monster by Lady Gaga on the Fame Monster and all all her fans are Little Monsters. Then Neyo just did a song called Beautiful monster. And I would say that’s a lot of monsters in pop music right now.

Then there’s the appearance of the Big Bad Wolf in Monster and Taio Cruz Break your Heart, would you say they were the same? But that’s another matter.

The Problem with Christina’s Image

May 29, 2010 at 1:47 pm (music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Genie in a Bottle [US] by Christina Aguilera cover

Although Christina  Aguilera is on of the best  singers ever and has a diva attitude she was never a pop star on the level of  Britney Spears or Madonna. Her  most success came from her hits in the 90s and her bubble gum pop image, which she quickly discarded in favor of a less mainstream image. She immediately went from bubble gum pop to Stripped calling herself Xtina and dirty. While her music was still  good it wasn’t mainstream anymore. It’s the same when she went Back to the Basics the sound was too jazzy for mainstream pop. And really she almost sings too well for mainstream is not usually the place of the best music anyways.

Now with Bionic Christina wants to be mainstream pop and she hasn’t been for years. And its been a while since her last album, 2006. She seems to be struggling to get back into the game, assuming people will listen and like her music because after all she is Christina Aguilera. Problem is Bionic is the first time in a long time she wanted to really be mainstream and she’s doing electropop, a genre in which you don’t really need a great voice, it kind of trivializes the need for one as pop does anyways.  In pop catchy matters more than if its good.

Her other problem is a female artist of the same genre who Christina has never said her name, Lady Gaga who is currently the queen of electro-pop.  She has made the mistake of paying her little mind as a threat and yet wearing things Gaga’s already worn and making vids that seem a little familar with either Madonna or Lady Gaga.  It isn’t that she’s copying Gaga and even if she was it really wouldn’t be a huge deal with she didn’t diss her and hadn’t transformed her image and style at the same time as Gaga.  I mean Rihanna has walked out wearing clothes Gaga’s worn but no one cared and other artists have done similar music but people didn’t really care all that much either.  Its that Christina’s image and music have suddenly become similar. Yeah she sings better, but pop isn’t about that or about loyalty and I don’t think she gets that.  She just gets how to make good songs.

It actually isn’t all that suprising she’s had to cancel her tour sadly.  I had been looking forward to this album.  I wanted to hear Christina’s electro-pop. I like Not myself tonight, but I’m not a huge fan of the vid, it kind of bored me. There was no meaning to anything, no faux storyline. There wasn’t really a point to anything done in the vid unless it was to be sexy or pay homage to Madonna. I’m not sure how good the rest of the album is Woo Hoo is kind of a disappointment and the other songs I heard are ok and Not Myself Tonight only made it to number 23, probably because of all this drama which made her makeover fail and the boring vid.

I worry that Christina needs to have some one tell her not to do stuff like wear things Gaga’s worn in public or in music vids, but because she is Christina, she can do what she wants and I fear that may be messing up her career. I’ve heard  that she likes to over sing (I think she does sometimes especially if she’s going to do pop pop) and when people warn her about that she doesn’t listen to them.

Yeah these pics are similar, same shades in Not Myself Tonight as Bad Romance. But it could have turned out differently if she acknowledged Gaga. Because at first people were saying Gaga looks like Christina, although they were also saying Christina looked better and at that time she did, now I can’t say who looks better.

With Christina people always want to start stuff. Remember when they were pitting her against Britney Spears?   Like the radio will play Lady Gaga either right after or before Christina and say how people are saying Christina’s copying her. I think its a load of BS. Pop needs to stuff compared female artists to the point they can’t sell their music. But who’s going to do that when drama’s interesting?

Gaga’s Ice Cream

April 18, 2010 at 11:24 pm (food, music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , )

Here’s some ice cream I seriously want.  GaGa Ice cream.  Its advertised as smooth as ice cream, fresh as sherbert and one taste and you’ll go GaGa!  And seriously the site has a side ad for great gift ideas for Lady Gaga’s fans.  And its says things like order GaGa online. I think it might be some combo of ice cream and sherbert which sounds absolutely amazing!

I wonder if its Dirty Ice Cream? I wonder if Lady Gaga knows about this? What do you think?

Rihanna’s Streets of Rage

April 18, 2010 at 10:58 pm (music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Video games are making their way into pop music. Rihanna’s got the streets of rage beat going in the song Bubble Pop, an unreleased song off her Good Girl Gone Bad Album.  But since its streets of rage its got a strong connection to her Rated R Album.  And to think I didn’t think she was angry then.  Seems she wants to kick some ass.  Although the lyrics for this one are more similar to Gwen Stefani’s Bubble Pop Electric than the songs Rihanna sings on Rated R.  I kinda like this song

Here’s some footage from the game which has some pretty sweet music if you ask me:

Too bad the song falls in between Good Girl Gone Bad and Rated R.  Its good, but it didn’t fit on the album.  What do you think? Do you like the song?  And what do you think about using video game beats in pop music?

Trying to beat the system

March 24, 2010 at 7:03 am (art, commercial, music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I seriously don’t know what to do to advertise anymore except to go all out freaking crazy, because everything always turns out to be a popularity contest or a “who’s crazier” type of thing. Popularity online is basically whose got the most connections, but it could also be that someone knows how to beat the system, because they know the system.  Unfortunately I’m like the jester who decided to take on a real job.  I don’t know what I’m doing and I’m just juggling different things different ways until I find what works.  Therefore I’m struggling like a fool on a fool’s errand in the pursuit of happiness.

I entered a commercial contest for q94 and I’m struggling to figure it all out.   Please vote at http://www.q94radio.com/pages/commercialvoting.html

See the Pursuit of happiness in a commercial. It might be sad that life’s come to that, but its best not to cry over spilled milk.

A Monster Bad Romance Vid

November 10, 2009 at 2:08 pm (anime, art, fashion, music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I wonder if Lady gaga watches much anime or if this is a coincidence.  The cross in the monster as part of the title font and the big anime eyes in the  music video. They were so freaky.  I thought they came out in the beginning like they’re vampires or creatures born of the abyss.

Also in the vid there’s the attack of the Alexander Mcqueen monster.  She had premiered Bad Romance at the Alexander Mcqueen show so I guess that’s understandable.  And that polar bear dress was fierce.  There’s also a bit of East European feel to it to go along with that Russian sound that she uses in the song.  The only thing I thought was really scary was that cat.  I don’t know why but it freaked me out.

And the end is a surprise so if you haven’t seen it I won’t spoil it where strangely she looks like Amy Winehouse. I love the vid.  What do you think?

The mystery and power of Marilyn Monroe

October 25, 2009 at 8:41 pm (art, fashion, movies, music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Ever since  I heard that the grave next to Marilyn Monroe’s was put on sale,  I’ve been wondering what it was about her that people love so much (men and women) so naturally I had to find out.  What was so captivating that today that people are willing to spend millions to spend an eternity next to her be buried next to her?

Time and time again she appears in pop culture representing the epitome of beauty.  Many female stars attempt to capture her look or are strongly inspired by it.  Need I name some?  I’m sure you know.  Madonna, Lindsay Lohan, Megan Fox, Anna Nicole Smith, you get the picture.

She’s got at least one good song about her at least  inspired by her.  Know Elton John’s song Candle in the Wind?  It was originally written in 1973 about Marilyn.

And of course Andy Warhol painted his famous images of Marilyn Monroe.

Why?  It wasn’t just because she was beautiful and died tragically (not to mention the conspiracy theories her death spawned) at the age of 36, although that in itself might be enough to develop a cult following.  She didn’t let a hard early life stop her from becoming successful.  And seriously how many successful model, actress, singers are there? And of course she wasn’t just a dumb blonde.

What do you think about Marilyn Monroe and her influence today?
