Crazy VMAs

September 16, 2009 at 4:38 am (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I think that this was officially the craziest VMA show ever.  I never remember it being exciting at all.  Usually they hype it up and everyone gets let down.  Let when they were saying Britney Spears was making a comeback, but it was still too early for her.  I was glad when she did make a comeback though.

This year had the MJ tribute which was supposed to be the highlight of the show but I don’t think it was.  It had Madonna’s speech which was good if a bit redundant. MJ was a king and human.  MJ was like her except without a childhood and didn’t get the chance to made mistakes.  And she did not look like herself for some reason.  I almost didn’t recognize her.  I had to do a double take on Madonna whose image is known the world over.  The music and dancing was good.  I was kind of mad Janet only stayed out for a part of scream but she was good.  I wished everyone had gotten up and done thriller, but that’s just a dream.

And then there was the whole Kanye thing.  Kanye drinking on the red carpet and passing the booze around.  And then taking the mic from Taylor Swift.  I saw him on Jay Leno the other night and I seriously think the man’s got a problem and its not just his ego or inability to keep his opinions to himself.  He needs some help.

Kanye was not the only one to jump on stage uninvited.  Lil’ Mama did too.  Remember seeing her with Jay Z and Alicia Keys?  Not supposed to be there and she seriously pissed off Jay Z.

Pink’s performance was awesome.  I couldn’t believe those acrobatics.  And was she really singing? How the heck.

And Lady Gaga’s so Crazy! I love it.  She went on a date with Kermit the frog (although not too long ago she was wearing a jacket that looked like dead Kermits).  Her outfits were kind of scary too. I was like Beyonce get out of there now. But that could just be that I think masquerade masks are scary and Lady gaga was looking like the Phantom of the Opera behind her.  Her Paparazzi performance was terrifying.  It was like watching a 50s B horror movie with her dying at the end. Although it did look like Carrie too.  Do you think she over did it with the blood at the end and hanging by her arm?  Then there was her red lace outfit which I thought was because she had “died.”  I thought she looked like a dead red queen or king (I was thinking king when I first saw it for some reason) walking around. Her acceptance speech was funny.  She actually handed back the moon man to take off the head veil. And Perez looked like a rooster when he jumped up congratulating her.  Then there was what looked like bird nest outfit with the collar and leash.  And then there are rumours that Lady Gaga wanted to have lions at the VMAs.  Lions? Someone would have been eaten.  That would not have worked well.

Then there was Beyonce, the wonderful Beyonce.  I was so glad that as the winner of best video she gave Taylor the time to give her speech.

And there were more wonderful performers Muse and Green Day.

What do you think about this year’s VMAs? I think everyone was trying to out do everyone else.  At least that made it really interesting.

Gagaflutitis

April 3, 2009 at 5:24 am (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I admit I’ve searched way too much about Lady Gaga but there’s a reason and its that I got gagaflutitis or some such ridiculously named disease.  Gaga always talked about she’s going to give everyone the flu.  Apparently I caught it and sometimes its annoying even to me.

So how did I caught gagaflutitis?

Phase 1  Radio Gaga

Once I was listening to the radio.  I’m in college so I usually just use my computer, but I was home for a short break  around december so I was listening to the radio.  I like dance music so I was happy that I lot of dancy songs were on the radio like Katy Perry Hot N’ Cold, Rihanna Disturbia, etc.  Then I heard just dance, didn’t know who it was by yet, but I was like yes dance music’s back.  Naturally I looked up just dance on my computer and found out it was by lady gaga and I was like “what kinda of name is that?” Then I watched the music video and I was like hmm different, but cool.  Then I  saw poker face and was like wow! I loved the song and the beginning of the vid with the great danes.  Then I went through all the songs that were available on youtube at the time and realized they were all good.  But then my computer messed up.  It would only play the beginning of music videos so I ended up watching the beginning of poker face and disturbia too dozens of times.  And actually my computer let me play love game completely for some reason.

Next thing I knew my computer crashed completely and I was left depending on the computer lab for computer use and tv (which I rarely just watch tv usually it has to be a show that I like).  So I was watching tons of mtv u and stuff.  The funny thing is I think it was the crazy beat in love game that kept me hooked, because I couldn’t get enough bass after hearing that.  And of course I found out how dirty the lyrics were early on.  And I had made the mistake of watching The Fame part 1 in a computer lab if you know what happens in that.

Phase 2  Exams

Every exam period I usually watch tons of anime, but since throughout the year I started liking anime less and less I needed something to fill that void.  And so I listened to tons of Lady Gaga and watched all those fake vids people enjoy putting up.  I also starting looking up stuff about her like her age and where she was from and what’s her real name, etc. So then I decided that I was diffently getting the album The Fame during the Christmas break.  Usually I only like a few songs or so on an album but I liked all of Gaga’s so I had to buy it.  I also wanted to buy the Twilight album, because I had seen the movie and hey Muse is awesome.

Phase 3 The Fame

I bought The Fame on itunes and listened to it a lot during the break. Mostly uneventful I suppose.  Then I came back to school and was like whatever I’m over it.

Phase 4 Pop ate my heart

That was not true Heard some more songs online.  And saw the acoustic pokerface version.  Awesome.  So then I wanted tickets to see her show etc.  Still haven’t gone and the shows been postponed here…

So how bad is my gagaflutitis? I talk about her pretty much all day to everyone I know whenever I find out something I think is interesting about her or heard a new song.

Why am I so addicted? For one I always go through a phase of liking some muscian or other, but its never been this bad because the musician is now either dead or old.  They are not in the process of possibly becoming a legend, they already have become one.

Another reason is that her ideas and pictures are very accessible online.  Three I think I just like crazy musicians in general, especially if they’re very good.  And look at her fashion.  I think its crazy cool.  That zipper eye on American Idol? How crazy was that? Another big reason is that I’ve found some awesome music, other than hers.  Like why wasn’t I listening to Queen before? Then I found Roisin Murphy formerly of Moloko, Ladytron who’s supposed to be working with Christina Aguilera, the Gossip, and some others.  Also, she changes enough or puts out new material enough to keep my short attention span occupied.  And quite possibly the biggest reason is that she writes her own lyrics and designs her own clothes.

The funny thing about these phases is that the one I was going through right when I first heard Gaga was David Bowie who is one of her idols.

So am I obsessesed or going through a phrase? Probably a mixture of both.

Music N’ Books

July 31, 2008 at 7:25 pm (books, music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Lots of times I have a song that becomes stuck in my head thats connected to the book I happen to be reading, because I often listen to music while reading.

While reading New Moon I had the song Owner of a Lonely Heart by Yes in my head and while reading Priestess of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley and Diana Paxton I had Viva la Vida by Coldplay.  Both songs are awesome and had a connection to the book I was reading. With New Moon, the lyrics of Owner of a Lonely Heart goes: owner of a lonely heart much better than owner of a broken heart.  That book had me agreeing with the song because Bella’s heart was broken and well I don’t want to give anything away.

The book Priestess of Avalon connects Britain to Rome through the marriage (not official though) of the British priestess, Helena, and Constantius and their son Constantine. Both Constantius and Constantine became emperors so both ruled the world. There was a problem between the transtions of the old emperor with the new throughout the book.  Of course the Roman Calvary was involved with the story and the characters found themselves as fair as Jerusalem. And the story has that sadness of having ruled the world in past tense.  And of course there were missionaries in foreign fields because Constantine was spreading Christianity have a certain point. For Priestess of Avalon, Viva la vida has the lyrics:

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you know there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest work
But that was when I ruled the world
(Ohhhh Ohhh Ohhh)

Hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
(Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh)
