Pop Unicorn

Unicorns

Unicorns are appearing all over the place these days in anime and music videos. There’s Gundam Unicorn. I haven’t a clue what the unicorn is about since the last Gundam I watched was Gundam Seed.  Then there’s Ke$ha with her strange unicorn head people in the video for Blow. Although these have unicorns they’ve lost the meaning of unicorns,  Lady Gaga uses the symbolism of unicorns in the Born this Way vid. Gaga’s been claiming she loves unicorns because of  My Little Pony and that she identifies with them.

So what do Unicorns symbolize? That Gaga can identify with them and has them associated with Born This Way the song and album? Today unicorns are mostly depicted as horses with a single horn while traditional unicorns had a billy goat’s beard, a lion’s tail and cloven hooves like I drew in the above picture. Unicorns are normally associated with purity and grace and could only be caught by a virgin. Unicorns were prominent in heraldic symbolism and were often shown with a collar and a broken chain, indicating that they have freed themselves from bondage and cannot be taken again. Unicorns often have the power to heal physical and emotional wounds.

I think its the symbolism of freedom that unicorns represent and the purity of thought & emotion (not necessarily chastity) that makes the unicorn perfect for Born this Way.  What do you think?

A rip off or the power of the chords?

April 29, 2011 at 1:31 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Everyone’s been ripping into Lady Gaga for copying Madonna’s Express Yourself for her song Born this Way.  Lady Gaga said the chord progression was similar because she used one from disco.  Which I suppose Madonna would have as well since there were grumblings of her stealing from The Staple Singers Respect Yourself. Fortunately for Madonna and unfortunately for Lady Gaga, Respect Yourself isn’t as mainstream as taking from Express Yourself.  But after seeing this vid I truly wonder how many sound combinations there are to make in music.  Especially since everyone from Journey to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Black Eyed Peas used the same four chords.

Gagavision & Fundamentalists

April 7, 2011 at 3:49 pm (pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Gaga brings back Gagavision after a long awaited interval.  Wondering about the song playing when she’s looking at the Get out of Hell free card? Its Ladytron Seventeen. Lady Gaga listens to Ladytron lol.

Ok so more importantly what good does a Get out of Hell free card do? Like does that give her a free license to do whatever she wants because if she was sent there she can get out? Thats a real smart fundamentalist for you… A fundamentalist protester once gave me a billion dollar bill which I’m definitely keeping because who wouldn’t want a billion dollar bill?

One Billion Dollar Bill

Whose the guy on the bill?  Maybe their leader? Who knows.

Born this Way Friday

February 9, 2011 at 10:52 pm (music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , )

This week I’ve been trying to keep occupied while waiting for Born this Way.  Don’t want to be a total monster right? Just a little one. The hype to Born this Way is building.  The lyrics were released then Gaga said that she was releasing the song two days early.  Originally it was going to be released on the same day as the Grammys. Now we’ll get it in time to sing along, well some people will be able to.  I might be a able to tumble along.  And then there’s her cover art for the album.  She’s got an old glam look from the 70s + monsterness. Alot of people have noted she looks like Ke$ha on the cover, but I’ll say she looks the way Ke$ha wishes she could and tries to look like so whatevs to that.  And everyone seems to think all blonde females look the same. And Little Monsters have been keeping BornThisWayFriday a trending topic  on Twitter all this week.  I’ve never seen this much hype over one song which makes it the most exciting song release of my time and its got to be as good or better than the hype. I’ve never heard a bad Lady Gaga song.  Just ones that wouldn’t necessarily get played on the radio.

In the meantime I’ve been imaging what Born this Way will sound like.  Will it be a dance song? I’m sure it has to be. But when she sang a snippet it was definitely a ballad.   What’s Gaga got in store for us this time? Ellen showed off her imaginings and got James Blunt and Justin Bieber to help her out. Who else has been imagining the song while awaiting Born this Way Friday?

Metropolis Today

December 19, 2010 at 11:13 pm (anime, fashion, movies, music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , )

I find it amazing the effect a single silent film from the 1920s continues to have today on pop culture.  I only recently saw the movie, but before seeing it I knew every reason I should watch it. Many of my favorite people were influenced by it.  I didn’t need any other reason to watch it.

Osamu Tezuka, “The God of Manga” drew a comic called Metropolis based on the film. Later in 2001 a movie based on this manga was made. It is one of the few animes I’ve watched over and over. The others belong to Miyazaki. Its got great music (Ray Charles anyone?) and the visuals are astounding, but of course they would be. The visuals for the silent film are still amazing  to me and  living in the 21 century. I’m still wondering how heck they did all that in the 20s. True it ended up being the most expensive silent film ever made and if you add for inflation it is still one of the most expensive, but they just didn’t have technology like we do today so how’d they do those city scenes for one?

If you haven’t seen the vid for Queen’s Radio Gaga you should and if you haven’t heard the song know that it is awesome and you’re missing out. They used real footage from the silent film which I hadn’t realized until I watched it, because it just looks like its black and white, not that old kind of black and white that really sux, but just black and white. Of course not all of the vid is from Metropolis, but it is hard to tell the difference.

Then there’s Lady Gaga who got her name from Radio Gaga. She did a series of photos with the photagrapher David LaChapelle.

There are more people influenced by this movie such as Janelle Monae, but I’ve got to listen more to her music before I include her in the list of favorite people. Looks like she’s fairly cool to me and her music isn’t bad From looking at her album covers really connected to the idea of the film.  Thierry Mugler robotic outfits very much like the robot in the film, but I don’t know if he watched this or not.

Hmm I could just be obsessed with robots…but I think there is something more here. If you’ve got anything anything influenced by this film please share.

Why I should have my own show pt 3

December 7, 2010 at 11:36 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , )

In part three and  the end of the series of why I should have my own show. In part 1, I mentioned that I had the Fame and would explain it more so here I go. Seriously how many non-famous people find people they don’t know waving at them, have stalkers, and find that they must constantly escape from people? Not anyone I know of except me. If you share this probably please share it with me.

I figure I must look like someone famous at the rate that people wave at me and I have no idea who the heck they are. I’ve been told I look like Beyonce’s younger sister Solange, but really how famous is she? And I’ve been told I look like Alicia Keys, but I think thats mostly for hair style.   And as for stalkers? I have at least one. Unfortunately one has my number…so he keeps calling…and you know I want nothing to do with that. Last time I spoke to him he was like he didn’t care if I kept hanging up on him as long as he could hear my voice…for some reason he thinks I’m the only person that understands him.  I would consider changing my number if he called more often…

As for escaping from people.  I sometimes wish I had a bodyguard. I could be with a group of people, yet crazy people just tend to walk towards me…or people -really ugly, old dudes- keep trying to talk to me.  I want nothing to do with that and its not even like I’m walking by myself.  Literally my friends and I have more than once had to pile into a car and take off before we were actually in our seats because someone was walking towards me and saying something…ends up looking like this.

Or if I wear something a bit different things can get interesting… If it looks really nice girls decided they MUST go shopping right then or just say really awkward things.  If its a bit weird everyone feels like they must comment on it. For example once I went on in my softball shirt which features a flaming unicorn. One person went absolutely nuts raving how awesome it was, while another kept saying thats really weird, why would you wear that and this was just a trip to the grocery store.

I find that my life is not normal as it is, but if I do actually become famous it will probably be like this times 10 which would pretty much suck.  Although at the moment I feel like I’m famous without the benefits of being famous, well maybe I have some.  What are the benefits anyways? That everyone knows who you are? Is that really a benefit?

So do you want to become famous?

Why I should have my own show pt 1

November 28, 2010 at 1:52 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I know, I know everyone wants their own show. They think it’ll make them famous, but you probably already have to be famous to get your own show for the most part. I don’t want a show in order to be famous. Hell I don’t care if I’m actually in it.  I just believe that the things that happen to me are so weird and funny that my life should be a show. A reality show would be the last thing that would give it justice really, but my life could easily be a sitcom or a cartoon. A comic would work too.  Really it would be like one of those Nickelodeon or Disney shows like icarly, Even Stevens or something.

I said a few posts ago that my life’s  like the Apprentice, which it is, but when you combine that with The Fame hilarity ensues and that hilarity is y life. If you’ve been reading my posts you know I’m obsessed with Lady Gaga so when I say the Fame I say it with what her definition. Everyone can have the Fame whether you’re actually  famous or not.

So what happened this past week?

1. I was kidnapped

2. I had to basically run from people…I think people think I’m famous or something.  It keeps leading to really awkward situations which I’ll get to another time…I feel like I need a body-guard quite often…

3. A lady tried buying Dane Cook tix from me that I don’t have.  Not to mention Dane Cook was in Richmond several weeks ago…and I don’t even like Dane Cook.

4. Saw a Segway Tour. They always make me laugh.  It’s a shame the Segway creator drove off a cliff on a Segway…

5. I went back to the Martin Agency so I thought I was on Mad Men. I wasn’t doing any advertising while I was there though…but I did see the Geico Gecko.

Bigger than Jesus

November 14, 2010 at 7:20 pm (pop culture) (, , , , , , )

In the 60s, the Beatles claimed they were bigger than Jesus. It pissed people off, but no one had any proof if they actually were bigger than Jesus…at least  in the minds of people.  The people at Urlesque decided to see if anyone was actually bigger than Jesus today. And the results weren’t really surprise, well except for the cats.

So whose bigger than Jesus? The singers with the most views on You Tube, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.

Just don’t replace either one of them with Jesus. It does lead to some funny pics, but otherwise its just scary.

Gaga as a Saint:

The Last Supper with Gaga as Jesus.

fuckyeahladygaga: ‘Lady Gaga’s Last Supper.’ (source) Hahahaha. I like this. There’s Shakira on her right! Hell yeah! Left of Gaga: Britney SpearsBeyonceMariah CareyJanet JacksonWhitney HoustonMadonnaRight of Gaga:ShakiraKelly ClarksonPinkJessica SimpsonRihanna

I haven’t seen glorifying pics of Bieber yet…but I’m sure they’re out there.

Jesus is definitely not on people’s minds as much as he once was. Its certain that people wouldn’t  be phased today if somesome claimed to be bigger than Jesus.  They would just sigh and accept that as the reason for things being the way they are today (what ever that means to them).

I’ll admit I don’t google Jesus much. I should probably think about him more often, but it isn’t like he is currently making headlines. Maybe sometime after society sped up we slowly stopped caring about things that don’t change.  The Bible stays the same, but our views about it have changed. So we don’t look up Jesus, we look up what people want to change.

I think even if we think about others more often than Jesus, Jesus will remain the constant that we compare everyone to.  Tomorrow we could literally forget all those stars on Urlesque’s list, but we won’t forget Jesus.  We haven’t forgotten in over 2000 years.

I am one of those people who google Gaga all the time (Bad pun?).  With her its different every day.  Just means I’m interested to see what she does. Doesn’t mean I replace Jesus with her though.

What do you think? Bigger than Jesus?
