Makes you want to be a Zombie doesn’t it?

April 22, 2010 at 11:19 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Natalia Kills, a British-born Jamaican, is being compared to Lady Gaga and Rihanna.  I wouldn’t say she’s very Gagaish except that she says Space Cowboy just play that track which is also something Gaga has said and this one pic which kind of reminds me of a particular scene in Telephone in which Gaga wears the cigarette glasses. And like Gaga she works with Akon and Space Cowboy and is in Cherrytree records.  Ok I guess that’s a lot in common, but it still doesn’t make her Gagaish.

So far she seems far more like Rihanna in her Rated R phase. Zombie is a very dark track that starts off sounding like Mad House and she’s singing about being in love with a zombie for crying out loud its going to be dark. The  lyrics like ” Cold, cold, freezing, freezing Got my heart beating, beating” and  “Cause he chasing me nightlyAnd I want him to bite me” are disturbing enough to give you the creeps, but not to stop listening to the song.  The video reminds me of Russian Roulette and old video footage.  She kind of reminds me of Kanye with his videos Paranoid and Coldest Winter and his use of autotune. The over all effect of the song and video is a vintage horror movie with a rocking track.

Now enough with the comparisons. People do it too much, but really it can’t be helped.  A sound and image can call up similar sounds and images. The song’s good I think, but has a heavy use of autotune. I guess I have to wait to see how well she really sings. But Zombie’s a good start to the album Perfectionist that is scheduled for a 2010 release. With Zombie she shows crossover appeal to America, but we’ll have to wait and see. And her new single Activate My Heart seems good too.

Grammys ’10 Battle of the divas

February 1, 2010 at 7:06 pm (music, Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I saw the grammys last night and thought it was awesome and because of the amount of female artist dueling it out for supremcy thisgrammy was officially the Battle of the Divas.

Lady Gaga and Elton John’s opener did not disappoint.  It came complete with a fame factory, monsters, and a sacrifce.  Gaga was sent straight to the flames.  Wish Gaga won a grammy on air and not just the two she won before, but I’m not complaining.  She did win more than one grammy and some awesome artists have never won any like Diana Ross who never won any despite being nominated for 12.

Beyonce was awesome as ever.  She’s in a league of her own.  5 Grammy wins, 2 years in a row.  I think she’s the only female artist so far to accomplish that.  It must have been weird for her to watch Jayz accept that award with Rihanna and her (B’s) nephew. I wish Rihanna had been able to perform that would have been nice.

So glad Kanye wasn’t there.   Didn’t get to yell at Taylor Swift as she cleaned up awards, not as much as Beyonce, but still.  She got album of the year.  I knew she would, but I’m still mad.  Just because she’s cute and had Kanye do something horrid.  I think it should have gone to Gaga or Beyonce.  I did like seeing Taylor perform with Stevie Nicks.

There was mad pairing going on at the Grammys.  Lady Gaga and Elton John, Taylor Switft and Stevie Nicks, and Roberta Flack and Maxwell.  I haven’t seen or heard about Roberta in like forever where’d they find her? I know she’s older now, but boy did she look stiff, like she couldn’t bend her neck.  It looked kind of uncomfortable.

I guess because I don’t listen to country I didn’t realize the Zac Brown Band was such a big deal.  I was hoping for Keri Hilson or MGMT or even the Ting Tings.  Granted MGMT and the Tings Tings havent’ gotten the air time of either the Zac Brown Band or Keri Hilson.

The Michael Jackson tribute was good but sometimes all the voices didn’t harmonize or something.  Sometimes Usher sounded off.  And two American Idol ex-contestants (I would say winners, but Jennifer Hudson didn’t winner although she was definitely good enough to) out of like five people.  American Idol must be proud.   I love Earth song, but I kind of wonder how it was chosen.  It was like they wanted to do We are the World, but couldn’t get the rights (Maybe because the song is being redone).  And I wished I had those 3-D glasses.  I kind of forgot to get some before the big snow storm came in and by then it was too late.  I wasn’t going out into the snow.

Pink’s performance was stunning.  I still can’t figure out how she can do those acrobatics and sing. I think I just starred in awe.  Especially because of the song choice too and I know I wasn’t the only one starring.  Black eyed peas did well too and I liked Lady Antebellum’s song.  And Bon Jovi of course.

The rap it the end although good sucked bad because they cussed so much half the song was edited.  So I couldn’t hear much of it.

Overall I enjoyed the Grammy’s.  How about you?  Who would you like to have seen win Grammy’s?

Eccentric pop

September 25, 2009 at 4:31 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Pop’s gone eccentric as people have gotten used to “normal”, the artists who try to be cool over different and unique.  I like eccentricies.  They’re exciting.

There’s Lady Gaga

La Roux

Empire of the Sun

Florence and the Machine

Rihanna

Kanye

MGMT

Bat for Lashes

Who’s your favorite?

Parodies

September 17, 2009 at 4:54 pm (music, Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I’ve been watching parodies on youtube.  Maybe too many, but I find them funny.  So I’m going to share some with you.  Watching the parodies has shown me that some people just have really good equipment and some people are actually really funny.

I think ijustine’s she wolf parody and swine busters are really funny. She has really awesome green screen and for all her silliness she actually kind of funny.  And I swear I saw her at the vmas talking about vma and Kanye tweets, but I’m not sure.

The venetianprincess is really funny.  I like all of her stuff expecially her poker face parody.  She has the erie ability to look like many different people including Angelina Jolie, Lady Gaga, and Megan Fox.

There are a lot of Lady Gaga parodies. MF arts does a good Just Dance one with No pantsFierce factor  also parodies fear factor.  There are pokemon, cat, and loads of other parodies of her that I’m not even going to begin to list.

Crazy VMAs

September 16, 2009 at 4:38 am (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I think that this was officially the craziest VMA show ever.  I never remember it being exciting at all.  Usually they hype it up and everyone gets let down.  Let when they were saying Britney Spears was making a comeback, but it was still too early for her.  I was glad when she did make a comeback though.

This year had the MJ tribute which was supposed to be the highlight of the show but I don’t think it was.  It had Madonna’s speech which was good if a bit redundant. MJ was a king and human.  MJ was like her except without a childhood and didn’t get the chance to made mistakes.  And she did not look like herself for some reason.  I almost didn’t recognize her.  I had to do a double take on Madonna whose image is known the world over.  The music and dancing was good.  I was kind of mad Janet only stayed out for a part of scream but she was good.  I wished everyone had gotten up and done thriller, but that’s just a dream.

And then there was the whole Kanye thing.  Kanye drinking on the red carpet and passing the booze around.  And then taking the mic from Taylor Swift.  I saw him on Jay Leno the other night and I seriously think the man’s got a problem and its not just his ego or inability to keep his opinions to himself.  He needs some help.

Kanye was not the only one to jump on stage uninvited.  Lil’ Mama did too.  Remember seeing her with Jay Z and Alicia Keys?  Not supposed to be there and she seriously pissed off Jay Z.

Pink’s performance was awesome.  I couldn’t believe those acrobatics.  And was she really singing? How the heck.

And Lady Gaga’s so Crazy! I love it.  She went on a date with Kermit the frog (although not too long ago she was wearing a jacket that looked like dead Kermits).  Her outfits were kind of scary too. I was like Beyonce get out of there now. But that could just be that I think masquerade masks are scary and Lady gaga was looking like the Phantom of the Opera behind her.  Her Paparazzi performance was terrifying.  It was like watching a 50s B horror movie with her dying at the end. Although it did look like Carrie too.  Do you think she over did it with the blood at the end and hanging by her arm?  Then there was her red lace outfit which I thought was because she had “died.”  I thought she looked like a dead red queen or king (I was thinking king when I first saw it for some reason) walking around. Her acceptance speech was funny.  She actually handed back the moon man to take off the head veil. And Perez looked like a rooster when he jumped up congratulating her.  Then there was what looked like bird nest outfit with the collar and leash.  And then there are rumours that Lady Gaga wanted to have lions at the VMAs.  Lions? Someone would have been eaten.  That would not have worked well.

Then there was Beyonce, the wonderful Beyonce.  I was so glad that as the winner of best video she gave Taylor the time to give her speech.

And there were more wonderful performers Muse and Green Day.

What do you think about this year’s VMAs? I think everyone was trying to out do everyone else.  At least that made it really interesting.

Fierce Swagger

April 11, 2009 at 4:42 pm (music, rant) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , )

The words firece and swagger are being used abused everywhere.  Fierce was popular after Christian Siriano on Project Runway was seen using it, but I thought it went out afterwards.  Now its back “Fiercer” than ever with everyone thinking so and so is fierce.  I’m sorry but everyone is not fierce.  And swagger… after hearing Swagger like you I know you may feel compelled to used the word, but its not for EVERY situation.  And its popping up in songs like Black Eyed Peas new song  Boom Boom Pow.

So before you use the words fierce or swagger think is it really fierce or is that really swagger.

Going down to Texas

August 2, 2008 at 3:41 pm (books, music, Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Well I’ll be going to start my journey down to Texas tomorrow. I’ll be gone about a week so no blog for a little while.  It’s going to be a road trip in a time of high gas.  How smart is that?

For the trip I downloaded some new songs from i tunes.  I had a little problem with downloaded because of some confusion between the old and new versions, but once it was completely updated there were no problems.  Here’s my list:

Viva la vida    Coldplay

Violet Hills    Coldplay

All along the Watchtower Jimi Hendrix

Purple Haze   Jimi Hendrix

California Dreamin’   Mamas and Papas

A Hazy Shade of Winter  Bangles

Eternal Flame       Bangles

Falling Down        Duran Duran

Jumper                 Third Eye Blind

Four Minutes       Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Timberland

American Boy     Estelle and Kanye

Island in the Sun   Weezer

No Rain               Blind Melon

Jealousy              Gin Blossoms

White Room        Cream

Dirty Little Secret   All American Rejects

What I noticed from my list is a lot of 90s music sounds like it came from either the late 60s or 70s while music now kind of sounds like 80s.  Like these are the children of those generations playing music now.

I am also hoping to be lucky enough to get my hands on a copy of Breaking Dawn from the library today since it just came out today so I could read it on my trip, but I’m starting to have doubts that my hold on it will let me get it today.  Oh well… I have other books to read.
