The Problem with Christina’s Image

Genie in a Bottle [US] by Christina Aguilera cover

Although Christina  Aguilera is on of the best  singers ever and has a diva attitude she was never a pop star on the level of  Britney Spears or Madonna. Her  most success came from her hits in the 90s and her bubble gum pop image, which she quickly discarded in favor of a less mainstream image. She immediately went from bubble gum pop to Stripped calling herself Xtina and dirty. While her music was still  good it wasn’t mainstream anymore. It’s the same when she went Back to the Basics the sound was too jazzy for mainstream pop. And really she almost sings too well for mainstream is not usually the place of the best music anyways.

Now with Bionic Christina wants to be mainstream pop and she hasn’t been for years. And its been a while since her last album, 2006. She seems to be struggling to get back into the game, assuming people will listen and like her music because after all she is Christina Aguilera. Problem is Bionic is the first time in a long time she wanted to really be mainstream and she’s doing electropop, a genre in which you don’t really need a great voice, it kind of trivializes the need for one as pop does anyways.  In pop catchy matters more than if its good.

Her other problem is a female artist of the same genre who Christina has never said her name, Lady Gaga who is currently the queen of electro-pop.  She has made the mistake of paying her little mind as a threat and yet wearing things Gaga’s already worn and making vids that seem a little familar with either Madonna or Lady Gaga.  It isn’t that she’s copying Gaga and even if she was it really wouldn’t be a huge deal with she didn’t diss her and hadn’t transformed her image and style at the same time as Gaga.  I mean Rihanna has walked out wearing clothes Gaga’s worn but no one cared and other artists have done similar music but people didn’t really care all that much either.  Its that Christina’s image and music have suddenly become similar. Yeah she sings better, but pop isn’t about that or about loyalty and I don’t think she gets that.  She just gets how to make good songs.

It actually isn’t all that suprising she’s had to cancel her tour sadly.  I had been looking forward to this album.  I wanted to hear Christina’s electro-pop. I like Not myself tonight, but I’m not a huge fan of the vid, it kind of bored me. There was no meaning to anything, no faux storyline. There wasn’t really a point to anything done in the vid unless it was to be sexy or pay homage to Madonna. I’m not sure how good the rest of the album is Woo Hoo is kind of a disappointment and the other songs I heard are ok and Not Myself Tonight only made it to number 23, probably because of all this drama which made her makeover fail and the boring vid.

I worry that Christina needs to have some one tell her not to do stuff like wear things Gaga’s worn in public or in music vids, but because she is Christina, she can do what she wants and I fear that may be messing up her career. I’ve heard  that she likes to over sing (I think she does sometimes especially if she’s going to do pop pop) and when people warn her about that she doesn’t listen to them.

Yeah these pics are similar, same shades in Not Myself Tonight as Bad Romance. But it could have turned out differently if she acknowledged Gaga. Because at first people were saying Gaga looks like Christina, although they were also saying Christina looked better and at that time she did, now I can’t say who looks better.

With Christina people always want to start stuff. Remember when they were pitting her against Britney Spears?   Like the radio will play Lady Gaga either right after or before Christina and say how people are saying Christina’s copying her. I think its a load of BS. Pop needs to stuff compared female artists to the point they can’t sell their music. But who’s going to do that when drama’s interesting?

Monster Ball Tour

October 16, 2009 at 11:44 am (art, fashion, music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Lady Gaga Announces 'The Monster Ball'

I’ve been talking about Lady Gaga a lot recently, but hey she’s about to release the Fame Monster (sounds kind of scary huh?) and doing awesome things like starting the “first ever pop-electro opera,”  the Monster Ball.  She’s recently released the poster for her tour (without Kanye West).  She announce that her opening is  to be none other than Kid Cudi.  I guess she wanted a quirky rapper to go on tour with her or one of the rappers from the I make her say”I poke her face” song which also included Kanye and Common.  I do like Kid Cudi although I’m not a fan of this song.  I just think its stupid.  I like his song Day N Nite and how the vid includes The Wizard of Oz and Prince references and how half of the vid is a cartoon. What do you think of Kid Cudi going on  tour with Lady Gaga?

Do you like the Monster Ball poster?  I love it.   It looks really modelly (that’s not a word). She’s wearing the awesomeness she premiered on SNL.

Make sure you don’t confuse the name of the tour with the movie Monster’s Ball starring Halle Berry.  They have nothing in common except the name, as far as I know.

The tour sounds exciting.  I want to go.  What about you?

AOL’s leaving the Lady for Boots?

April 28, 2009 at 5:02 pm (music) (, , , , , , , )

For the past few months it seem like AOL’s Aim Zone would talk about Lady Gaga almost every day.  But today they wrote

Have You Heard
Of Little Boots?

Move Over Lady Gaga, There’s a New
Bombshell on the Scene: Meet Her

Does this mean AOL’s going to leave Lady Gaga for Little Boots?  Hmm…One electro-pop female for another?  Well both can play piano/keyboard well.  Both are good singers, although I think Lady Gaga is better.  And Lady Gaga seems to have more of a range in the types of music she can do.  What do you think?

Futuristic-Electro Pop

April 7, 2009 at 3:45 am (fashion, music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

The future is here or at least pop wants you to think that. The music sounds cool, but unfortunately it seems everyone’s copping the same style.  And it’s impossible to tell who started this trend and who the copiers are.   Another thing about electro pop is the singer doesn’t necessarily have to be able to sing in order for to sound good.  A good example of this is Britney Spears.  She came back on the cusp of the electro-pop trend and I think this type of music is good for her.  I actually like a few of her songs.  That hasn’t happened for me since the beginning of her career.

The trend is full of pantless looks, awesome shades, shininess, face make up, leggings, catsuits and awesome hair.  Look at Lady Gaga, Keri Hilson and Ciara.

 Ciara “Go Girl

 Christina Aguilera “Keeps gettin’ better

Of course men are on this electo pop wave too

 Kanye West

There seems to be a real push for female electro-pop singers.  So Kanye’s kind of out numbered right now not that he’s alone. Personally I like electro-pop, but I like real instruments better, so whenever I hear these songs with real instruments I love them even better.  What do you think about this new electro-pop trend?

Gagaflutitis

April 3, 2009 at 5:24 am (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I admit I’ve searched way too much about Lady Gaga but there’s a reason and its that I got gagaflutitis or some such ridiculously named disease.  Gaga always talked about she’s going to give everyone the flu.  Apparently I caught it and sometimes its annoying even to me.

So how did I caught gagaflutitis?

Phase 1  Radio Gaga

Once I was listening to the radio.  I’m in college so I usually just use my computer, but I was home for a short break  around december so I was listening to the radio.  I like dance music so I was happy that I lot of dancy songs were on the radio like Katy Perry Hot N’ Cold, Rihanna Disturbia, etc.  Then I heard just dance, didn’t know who it was by yet, but I was like yes dance music’s back.  Naturally I looked up just dance on my computer and found out it was by lady gaga and I was like “what kinda of name is that?” Then I watched the music video and I was like hmm different, but cool.  Then I  saw poker face and was like wow! I loved the song and the beginning of the vid with the great danes.  Then I went through all the songs that were available on youtube at the time and realized they were all good.  But then my computer messed up.  It would only play the beginning of music videos so I ended up watching the beginning of poker face and disturbia too dozens of times.  And actually my computer let me play love game completely for some reason.

Next thing I knew my computer crashed completely and I was left depending on the computer lab for computer use and tv (which I rarely just watch tv usually it has to be a show that I like).  So I was watching tons of mtv u and stuff.  The funny thing is I think it was the crazy beat in love game that kept me hooked, because I couldn’t get enough bass after hearing that.  And of course I found out how dirty the lyrics were early on.  And I had made the mistake of watching The Fame part 1 in a computer lab if you know what happens in that.

Phase 2  Exams

Every exam period I usually watch tons of anime, but since throughout the year I started liking anime less and less I needed something to fill that void.  And so I listened to tons of Lady Gaga and watched all those fake vids people enjoy putting up.  I also starting looking up stuff about her like her age and where she was from and what’s her real name, etc. So then I decided that I was diffently getting the album The Fame during the Christmas break.  Usually I only like a few songs or so on an album but I liked all of Gaga’s so I had to buy it.  I also wanted to buy the Twilight album, because I had seen the movie and hey Muse is awesome.

Phase 3 The Fame

I bought The Fame on itunes and listened to it a lot during the break. Mostly uneventful I suppose.  Then I came back to school and was like whatever I’m over it.

Phase 4 Pop ate my heart

That was not true Heard some more songs online.  And saw the acoustic pokerface version.  Awesome.  So then I wanted tickets to see her show etc.  Still haven’t gone and the shows been postponed here…

So how bad is my gagaflutitis? I talk about her pretty much all day to everyone I know whenever I find out something I think is interesting about her or heard a new song.

Why am I so addicted? For one I always go through a phase of liking some muscian or other, but its never been this bad because the musician is now either dead or old.  They are not in the process of possibly becoming a legend, they already have become one.

Another reason is that her ideas and pictures are very accessible online.  Three I think I just like crazy musicians in general, especially if they’re very good.  And look at her fashion.  I think its crazy cool.  That zipper eye on American Idol? How crazy was that? Another big reason is that I’ve found some awesome music, other than hers.  Like why wasn’t I listening to Queen before? Then I found Roisin Murphy formerly of Moloko, Ladytron who’s supposed to be working with Christina Aguilera, the Gossip, and some others.  Also, she changes enough or puts out new material enough to keep my short attention span occupied.  And quite possibly the biggest reason is that she writes her own lyrics and designs her own clothes.

The funny thing about these phases is that the one I was going through right when I first heard Gaga was David Bowie who is one of her idols.

So am I obsessesed or going through a phrase? Probably a mixture of both.
