The Problem with Christina’s Image

May 29, 2010 at 1:47 pm (music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Genie in a Bottle [US] by Christina Aguilera cover

Although Christina  Aguilera is on of the best  singers ever and has a diva attitude she was never a pop star on the level of  Britney Spears or Madonna. Her  most success came from her hits in the 90s and her bubble gum pop image, which she quickly discarded in favor of a less mainstream image. She immediately went from bubble gum pop to Stripped calling herself Xtina and dirty. While her music was still  good it wasn’t mainstream anymore. It’s the same when she went Back to the Basics the sound was too jazzy for mainstream pop. And really she almost sings too well for mainstream is not usually the place of the best music anyways.

Now with Bionic Christina wants to be mainstream pop and she hasn’t been for years. And its been a while since her last album, 2006. She seems to be struggling to get back into the game, assuming people will listen and like her music because after all she is Christina Aguilera. Problem is Bionic is the first time in a long time she wanted to really be mainstream and she’s doing electropop, a genre in which you don’t really need a great voice, it kind of trivializes the need for one as pop does anyways.  In pop catchy matters more than if its good.

Her other problem is a female artist of the same genre who Christina has never said her name, Lady Gaga who is currently the queen of electro-pop.  She has made the mistake of paying her little mind as a threat and yet wearing things Gaga’s already worn and making vids that seem a little familar with either Madonna or Lady Gaga.  It isn’t that she’s copying Gaga and even if she was it really wouldn’t be a huge deal with she didn’t diss her and hadn’t transformed her image and style at the same time as Gaga.  I mean Rihanna has walked out wearing clothes Gaga’s worn but no one cared and other artists have done similar music but people didn’t really care all that much either.  Its that Christina’s image and music have suddenly become similar. Yeah she sings better, but pop isn’t about that or about loyalty and I don’t think she gets that.  She just gets how to make good songs.

It actually isn’t all that suprising she’s had to cancel her tour sadly.  I had been looking forward to this album.  I wanted to hear Christina’s electro-pop. I like Not myself tonight, but I’m not a huge fan of the vid, it kind of bored me. There was no meaning to anything, no faux storyline. There wasn’t really a point to anything done in the vid unless it was to be sexy or pay homage to Madonna. I’m not sure how good the rest of the album is Woo Hoo is kind of a disappointment and the other songs I heard are ok and Not Myself Tonight only made it to number 23, probably because of all this drama which made her makeover fail and the boring vid.

I worry that Christina needs to have some one tell her not to do stuff like wear things Gaga’s worn in public or in music vids, but because she is Christina, she can do what she wants and I fear that may be messing up her career. I’ve heard  that she likes to over sing (I think she does sometimes especially if she’s going to do pop pop) and when people warn her about that she doesn’t listen to them.

Yeah these pics are similar, same shades in Not Myself Tonight as Bad Romance. But it could have turned out differently if she acknowledged Gaga. Because at first people were saying Gaga looks like Christina, although they were also saying Christina looked better and at that time she did, now I can’t say who looks better.

With Christina people always want to start stuff. Remember when they were pitting her against Britney Spears?   Like the radio will play Lady Gaga either right after or before Christina and say how people are saying Christina’s copying her. I think its a load of BS. Pop needs to stuff compared female artists to the point they can’t sell their music. But who’s going to do that when drama’s interesting?

Laughing in songs

January 25, 2010 at 9:10 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , )

Laughing is in a lot of songs and I can’t figure out what it brings to them. But here are a few songs with laughing.

Britney Spears Gimme More Just makes her sound crazy.

Sting /The Police   Roxanne I heard the laugh was because of an accident.

And this very funny song fancy pants with Lady Gaga and Lady Starlight.

Seems strange to compare these songs, but they do all have laughter in them. If you have anymore songs with laughing in it or an idea of why there is laughter in songs please share.

Magic Date November 23rd

November 20, 2009 at 12:07 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

What’s up with releasing all these albums on the same day? I know they’re trying to jump start the holiday season and this is a good time to release albums, but seriously all on the same day?

Shakira She Wolf    I liked the song She Wolf whether other people liked it or not I can’t say.

Lady Gaga   Fame Monster    Listen to the dark side of fame.  Some of the songs are scary so watch out, but they’re all addictive.

Beyonce     Iam…Yours  Live album   Beyonce’s first live album and she’s got pipes that are shown off live.

Adam Lambert  For Your Entertainment   Glam

Rihanna     Rated R        Was this written for Chris Brown? Some of it is kind of it is frightening and sounds really rough.

Susan Boyle   I Dreamed a Dream   She can sing for real.

Kenny G     Holiday Album     Yes he’s releasing an album

And it looks like Britney Spears was a little off with release of her singles collection.

Are you planning to buy one of the many albums released on November 23rd?  In person or on itunes? Or are you just into singles?  Personally I’m getting the fame monster.  I haven’t figured out if I’m getting the version with the fame attached or not.  I’m buying the actual physical CD  because I want the cover.

Pop Hearts

October 13, 2009 at 8:33 pm (art) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

4popheartsHere’s a set of Andy Warhol style pop hearts that I made inspired in part by the Pet Shop Boys Pop Art cover.

 The first heart is fierce.

The second heart enjoys the taste of pop.

The third heart’s in pain.  It needs more pop

And the last heart’s got Madonna and Britney Spears in its eyes as it eats Michael Jackson and eyes Angelina Jolie.

At least that’s what it means to me.  What do you think?

Mash-ups and Cool Djs

September 20, 2009 at 12:55 am (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Mash-ups and remixes are spectacularly crazy and much of the time people are doing them in their own homes and getting them out to the people via youtube.  Sometimes the remix is even better than the original.  It’s not just professional djs anymore not that the pros are slacking.  Here are some of my favs pros and not.

Robin Skouteris  Madonna VS Lady Gaga VS Pitbull, Robin Skouteris VS Nirvana, Cyndi Lauper VS Missy Elliott

LMFAO  Love LockDown Remix, Shooting Star  I think both are better than the original

SoBraLiajdyjonkt Shakira/Ciara/Justin Timberlake/Lady Gaga/Pitbull

Justice  Electric Feel, Genesis

imbastardbob Wolf Game, Love is a Circus, I kissed a girl from miles away Sometimes Songs go with other music.

I have a few more I’m going to talk about soon.  Tell me what you think about these and name some of your favs.

Kanye’s Incident

September 16, 2009 at 4:46 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , )

I don’t think Kanye West would have jumped up on the stage if anyone else had won, except maybe Kelly Clarkson.  I mean obviously if Beyonce won best female video he wouldn’t have had anything to say (at that time).  I’m sure he would have jumped up some other time seeing that he was not there to see himself lose in the categories that he had been nominated for.  And if Pink won, well she was she had a brass knuckle purse or something and she has an aura of toughness so he would have had to think twice about that.  As for Lady Gaga, she’s going on tour with him soon.  That would have been really awkward.  Not to mention she did look like the phantom of the opera at the time.

As Katy Perry said on her twitter Kanye stepped on a kitten.  Taylor so cute and innocent.  She didn’t know what to think when he had jumped on stage.  It was her first vma and he chose to jump up and say that during her time.  I wonder if he would have bothered Katy though and what would have happened if he had.

Eminem how much TV do you watch?

April 8, 2009 at 3:13 am (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Eminem’s got a new song out, We made you, and a video too.  It’s one of his songs that are hilarious because he’s making fun of everyone, but the quality of the song itself isn’t that good. Remember that one making fun of Michael Jackson not too long ago?  It’s the video that makes this song worth talking about.  There are parodies of  the Sarah Palin rap on Saturday Night Live (There’s a polar bear and an eskimo) and the Nailin’ Palin porn at the same time as he’s making fun of rock stars (he’s got a bret michaels look going on half the time).

And of course these aren’t nearly half of the parodies that he manages to squeeze in a song that isn’t but a few minutes in length. There’s Star Trek, Britney Spears, Lindsay and Sam. If its talked about often, he makes fun of it which makes me wonder what does he do with his time. Look at TMZ? Entertainment TV? Granted I know about this stuff too…, but it tends to leave my mind after a while.

So what do you think about this song and video?

Futuristic-Electro Pop

April 7, 2009 at 3:45 am (fashion, music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

The future is here or at least pop wants you to think that. The music sounds cool, but unfortunately it seems everyone’s copping the same style.  And it’s impossible to tell who started this trend and who the copiers are.   Another thing about electro pop is the singer doesn’t necessarily have to be able to sing in order for to sound good.  A good example of this is Britney Spears.  She came back on the cusp of the electro-pop trend and I think this type of music is good for her.  I actually like a few of her songs.  That hasn’t happened for me since the beginning of her career.

The trend is full of pantless looks, awesome shades, shininess, face make up, leggings, catsuits and awesome hair.  Look at Lady Gaga, Keri Hilson and Ciara.

Lady Gaga’s prism dress

Keri Hilson in “Return the Favor

 Ciara “Go Girl

 Christina Aguilera “Keeps gettin’ better

Of course men are on this electo pop wave too

 Kanye West

There seems to be a real push for female electro-pop singers.  So Kanye’s kind of out numbered right now not that he’s alone. Personally I like electro-pop, but I like real instruments better, so whenever I hear these songs with real instruments I love them even better.  What do you think about this new electro-pop trend?
