Metropolis Today

I find it amazing the effect a single silent film from the 1920s continues to have today on pop culture.  I only recently saw the movie, but before seeing it I knew every reason I should watch it. Many of my favorite people were influenced by it.  I didn’t need any other reason to watch it.

Osamu Tezuka, “The God of Manga” drew a comic called Metropolis based on the film. Later in 2001 a movie based on this manga was made. It is one of the few animes I’ve watched over and over. The others belong to Miyazaki. Its got great music (Ray Charles anyone?) and the visuals are astounding, but of course they would be. The visuals for the silent film are still amazing  to me and  living in the 21 century. I’m still wondering how heck they did all that in the 20s. True it ended up being the most expensive silent film ever made and if you add for inflation it is still one of the most expensive, but they just didn’t have technology like we do today so how’d they do those city scenes for one?

If you haven’t seen the vid for Queen’s Radio Gaga you should and if you haven’t heard the song know that it is awesome and you’re missing out. They used real footage from the silent film which I hadn’t realized until I watched it, because it just looks like its black and white, not that old kind of black and white that really sux, but just black and white. Of course not all of the vid is from Metropolis, but it is hard to tell the difference.

Then there’s Lady Gaga who got her name from Radio Gaga. She did a series of photos with the photagrapher David LaChapelle.

There are more people influenced by this movie such as Janelle Monae, but I’ve got to listen more to her music before I include her in the list of favorite people. Looks like she’s fairly cool to me and her music isn’t bad From looking at her album covers really connected to the idea of the film.  Thierry Mugler robotic outfits very much like the robot in the film, but I don’t know if he watched this or not.

Hmm I could just be obsessed with robots…but I think there is something more here. If you’ve got anything anything influenced by this film please share.

A Monster Bad Romance Vid

November 10, 2009 at 2:08 pm (anime, art, fashion, music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I wonder if Lady gaga watches much anime or if this is a coincidence.  The cross in the monster as part of the title font and the big anime eyes in the  music video. They were so freaky.  I thought they came out in the beginning like they’re vampires or creatures born of the abyss.

Also in the vid there’s the attack of the Alexander Mcqueen monster.  She had premiered Bad Romance at the Alexander Mcqueen show so I guess that’s understandable.  And that polar bear dress was fierce.  There’s also a bit of East European feel to it to go along with that Russian sound that she uses in the song.  The only thing I thought was really scary was that cat.  I don’t know why but it freaked me out.

And the end is a surprise so if you haven’t seen it I won’t spoil it where strangely she looks like Amy Winehouse. I love the vid.  What do you think?

The Manga Bible

October 29, 2009 at 12:54 pm (anime, books, comics) (, , , , , , , , , , , , )

I just read The Manga Bible: From Genesis to Revelation by Siku and Akin. I liked it.   It doesn’t go into too much depth considering that its the entire bible in one volume that around 200 pages.  But because it doesn’t go into depth the reader is able to see the progression of time and the cyclical nature of how the Jews would believe in One God then be led astray and how they were brought back again.  It also shows the similarity between the types of people chosen by God.  No one was flawless.

And Jesus is awesome in here (not that he’s not awesome everywhere else), but I think people have a tendency of showing Jesus as kind of soft.  In this book he’s definitely kick ass.  And when he think about it he probably had to be.  He lasted in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights, turned down the devil, knocked some sense into the Pharisees, the list goes on.

The manga bible provides a slightly different point of view than what you’re probably used to, but there are many points of view when it comes to understanding the bible.

Witch Hunter Robin Takes a Bow

April 28, 2009 at 5:05 am (anime, music) (, , , , , )

I’ve noticed that a lot of people wonder what Robin from Witch Hunter Robin is doing with the TV in the series opening.  I kind of wondered myself, but I guess she’s reminicing  just like Madonna in the music video Take a Bow, and trying to touch someone who’s not there.  There’s always a hint of something else when it comes to Madonna.  But they both see that man that they like (at least implied in the video/anime). Looks kind of similar doesn’t it?
