A rip off or the power of the chords?

April 29, 2011 at 1:31 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Everyone’s been ripping into Lady Gaga for copying Madonna’s Express Yourself for her song Born this Way.  Lady Gaga said the chord progression was similar because she used one from disco.  Which I suppose Madonna would have as well since there were grumblings of her stealing from The Staple Singers Respect Yourself. Fortunately for Madonna and unfortunately for Lady Gaga, Respect Yourself isn’t as mainstream as taking from Express Yourself.  But after seeing this vid I truly wonder how many sound combinations there are to make in music.  Especially since everyone from Journey to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Black Eyed Peas used the same four chords.

A Bittersweet Flashback

April 8, 2011 at 10:38 am (music, pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

One of the most beautiful songs of the 90s and quite possibly of all time, Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve has a Bittersweet history.  A lot of songs sample music from other tracks, but don’t lose their song writing credits. I suppose it matters who you are. If you’ve got a big name like Madonna and that case over her song Frozen, I guess you get to keep your credits. Same case with Bitter Sweet Symphony. The Verve is the less known group when compared to the Rolling Stones, so the Stones ended up with the credit for it, 100% even though the lyrics were original and it wasn’t a direct copy.

So what was copied? The melody for The Rolling Stones’ The Last Time, but not directly. They sampled the Andrew Oldham Orchestra’s version.

And so the Verve whenever they play this song, their most popular and successful song, they helping to fill the bank of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards more than their own.

Gagavision & Fundamentalists

April 7, 2011 at 3:49 pm (pop culture) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Gaga brings back Gagavision after a long awaited interval.  Wondering about the song playing when she’s looking at the Get out of Hell free card? Its Ladytron Seventeen. Lady Gaga listens to Ladytron lol.

Ok so more importantly what good does a Get out of Hell free card do? Like does that give her a free license to do whatever she wants because if she was sent there she can get out? Thats a real smart fundamentalist for you… A fundamentalist protester once gave me a billion dollar bill which I’m definitely keeping because who wouldn’t want a billion dollar bill?

One Billion Dollar Bill

Whose the guy on the bill?  Maybe their leader? Who knows.

Woah Diva!

Tsk Tsk Natalia Kills vid for Zombie is cool, but why the similarities to Diva? The vid seems for relevant to Zombie. For one, what’s a Diva doing blowing up a car full of manikins? But hey whatever floats your boat.

Picasso at VMFA

April 4, 2011 at 7:55 pm (art) (, , , , , , , )

Painting of Dora Maar

I went to Picasso for my birthday this past weekend at the Virginia Art Museum more commonly called the VMFA. They had so much of his art. It was ridiculous! Of course with this amount of Picasso on the weekend hundreds of people showed up to look at his art too. Some of those halls had me absolutely claustrophobic.  I’m usually never claustrophobic but if I hadn’t wanted to see those paintings I woulda been outta there. Not to mention that my family totally left me so I was alone in the sea of people. Yeah I was really taking my time. I came out of the exhibit a full 15 minutes after them and I would have taken longer if I could take the crowd. They tired me out.

I’m planning to go back on a week day. I have a membership so I can go free whenever I want. 🙂 Although I would like to go back with someone else with a membership so I don’t have to go in by myself…but I’ll probably be left by them as well…sigh

Did you go to see Picasso? What did you think about the exhibit?
