Pop Unicorn
Unicorns are appearing all over the place these days in anime and music videos. There’s Gundam Unicorn. I haven’t a clue what the unicorn is about since the last Gundam I watched was Gundam Seed. Then there’s Ke$ha with her strange unicorn head people in the video for Blow. Although these have unicorns they’ve lost the meaning of unicorns, Lady Gaga uses the symbolism of unicorns in the Born this Way vid. Gaga’s been claiming she loves unicorns because of My Little Pony and that she identifies with them.
So what do Unicorns symbolize? That Gaga can identify with them and has them associated with Born This Way the song and album? Today unicorns are mostly depicted as horses with a single horn while traditional unicorns had a billy goat’s beard, a lion’s tail and cloven hooves like I drew in the above picture. Unicorns are normally associated with purity and grace and could only be caught by a virgin. Unicorns were prominent in heraldic symbolism and were often shown with a collar and a broken chain, indicating that they have freed themselves from bondage and cannot be taken again. Unicorns often have the power to heal physical and emotional wounds.
I think its the symbolism of freedom that unicorns represent and the purity of thought & emotion (not necessarily chastity) that makes the unicorn perfect for Born this Way. What do you think?

Thanks , I have recently been looking for info about this topic for ages and yours is the best I’ve discovered so far. But, what about the conclusion? Are you sure about the source?

As with any myth there are different stories and versions. Since there are a lot of varying stories of unicorns I didn’t name a source (I definitely used more than one) so I am sure of the truthfulness of what I wrote. I can give u some of the sources if you like.

Interesting. I never knew that’s how unicorns were originally depicted, they kind of reminded me a Griffin. I think unicorns symbolize something desired but unattainable (but that’s just based on the depiction in cartoons I used to watch as a kid). Good post!
