S-S-Stuttering in Songs

June 19, 2009 at 2:58 am (music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Stuttering is a problem that many people deal with, yet its something that shows up again and again in popular songs.  What is it about stuttering that makes it useful for songs and that people seem to like it?  Is it the repetition of a sound in a certain way?

Here’s a list of a few.  If you have more please comment.

Lady Gaga Paparazzi  poker face  eh eh nothing else I can say

Rihanna Umbrella

Jeremiah  Birthday Sex

And of course there’s Scatman by Scatman John who says in the song that

(Scatting by Scatman John)

Everybody stuttersone way or the other
So check out my message to you.
As a matter of fact don’t let nothin’ hold you back.
If the Scatman can do it so can you.

Everybody’s sayin’ that the Scatman stutters
But doesn’t ever stutter when he sings.
But what you don’t know I’m gonna tell you right now
That the stutter and the scat is the same thing.
Yo I’m the Scatman.

In 1965 the BBC refused to play The Who’s “My Generation”, saying they did not want to offend people who stuttered. When the song became a huge hit, the broadcaster relented and added it to their play list.

Seems that people like stuttering in songs, but not in speech.  What do you think about this?

The Host and altruism

June 16, 2009 at 6:36 pm (books) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I just finished reading The Host by Stepanie Meyer, you know the Twilight author.  I found a few similarities not only in the ideas of motherhood in the Twilight series but with some of the later books in Orson Scott Cards’ Ender’s Game series.  There is the idea that motherhood is desired no matter how much pain is necessary to go through it.  If you read Breaking Dawn you could never forget that horrifying birth scene.  In the Host the mothers essentially die when they give completely of themselves in order to give birth.

Well both Stephanie Meyer and Orson Scott Card are Mormon, and I haven’t seen the occurance of such sacrifice and altruism demanded of the mother in other books.  Since I don’t know too much about the Mormon religion I have to ask is this a treasured value?

The book is really good though and I recommend it, especially if you liked Twilight although remember it is a completely different story with different characters. I didn’t find any of the characters dislikeable, like I mustly found Bella, but I didn’t find  any of them as loveable as either Edward or Jacob.

A similarity that I did not like between the Twilight series and The Host, is the amount of pain that the beloved causes the girl, but what’s a love story without that?

When Love Takes Over

June 11, 2009 at 11:02 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , , , )

There’s more sampling in Kelly Rowland and David Guetta’s  When Love Takes Over.  This time its Coldplay’s Clocks.  Only think is it sounds very much like the Wii DDR version of Clocks which is really dancy and good, but its diffently not as good as the original.   I didn’t think Kelly had anymore in her, but this song is catchy. I think her last hit was Stole in 2002.

Songs Feat. other artist

June 8, 2009 at 12:46 am (music) (, , , , , , , , , , )

I think that if an artist is going to have another one featured in their song the other artist should have more than just the chorus if they’re known and good. I can understand something like Lady Gaga’s Just Dance featuring Colby O’Donis giving him a short time to sing (or rap or whatever), although Akon is in it too and he doesn’t get featured although at the time the song came out he was definitely way more famous than either Lady Gaga or Colby.

I mean don’t give them one line to sing that basically anyone else could do like Pharrell’s song Can I have it like that featuring Gwen Stefani.  Wale’s Chillin featuring Lady Gaga has Lady Gaga singing more than one line, but its still the chorus.  And the strange thing about this one is she sounds a lot like MIA.

What do you think about these songs?

Out of Control Sampling

June 2, 2009 at 7:46 pm (music) (, , , , , , , , , , )

There’s out of the control sampling on the radio these days sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t.  There’s goodbye by Kristina Debarge that samples Na na na na hey hey hey goodbye.  I actually like this song.  The sample enhanced the meaning of the song and in general improved it.

Then there’s Sugar by Flo Rida that samples I’m blue (da ba dee) that kind of reminded me of Echo and the Bunnymen’s Lips like Sugar.  I thought the song was strange and uninventive.  I think that if your going to sample someone’s music use it effectively and don’t copy the song or combine other musicians songs with it, because that is uninventive.  Not to mention that Flo Rida has already used you spin me round in his song Right Round.  Can he think of a song completely on his own?
