Music N’ Books

July 31, 2008 at 7:25 pm (books, music) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Lots of times I have a song that becomes stuck in my head thats connected to the book I happen to be reading, because I often listen to music while reading.

While reading New Moon I had the song Owner of a Lonely Heart by Yes in my head and while reading Priestess of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley and Diana Paxton I had Viva la Vida by Coldplay.  Both songs are awesome and had a connection to the book I was reading. With New Moon, the lyrics of Owner of a Lonely Heart goes: owner of a lonely heart much better than owner of a broken heart.  That book had me agreeing with the song because Bella’s heart was broken and well I don’t want to give anything away.

The book Priestess of Avalon connects Britain to Rome through the marriage (not official though) of the British priestess, Helena, and Constantius and their son Constantine. Both Constantius and Constantine became emperors so both ruled the world. There was a problem between the transtions of the old emperor with the new throughout the book.  Of course the Roman Calvary was involved with the story and the characters found themselves as fair as Jerusalem. And the story has that sadness of having ruled the world in past tense.  And of course there were missionaries in foreign fields because Constantine was spreading Christianity have a certain point. For Priestess of Avalon, Viva la vida has the lyrics:

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you know there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest work
But that was when I ruled the world
(Ohhhh Ohhh Ohhh)

Hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
(Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh)

Mirror, Mirror

July 31, 2008 at 2:05 am (books) (, , , , , , , , , )

I read another of Greg Maguire’s books, Mirror, Mirror which is an alternate telling of Sleeping Beauty.  It reminded me somewhat of the manga Ludwig Kakumei by Yuki Kaori in which the mangaka tells some twisted fairy tales.  I think fans of one may like the other.  Mirror, Mirror took place in Italy doing the time of Cesare so the wicked stepmother is his sister Lucrezia. The problem I had with the book was that it had too many details, I guess in an attempt to show the time period, about what was going on politically when it really had nothing to do with the story. I guess people who are into that time period may enjoy that, but it kinda just sounded like mumble jumble to me and didn’t bring anything to the story.  It’s still a fairly decent book, but not nearly as good as Wicked.

Roman Holiday

July 31, 2008 at 1:30 am (movies) (, , , , , , , , , )

I just watched another Audrey Hepburn movie, Roman Holiday.  It was a good movie and her first as far as I know.  The thing that I noticed was that so many movies have copied that one.  Remember First Daughter with Katie Holmes and Chasing Liberty with Mandy Moore? Young woman tired of being smothered and having to be responsible all the time.  Although I enjoyed both films they were not as good as Roman Holiday of course.  And those movies didn’t have an ending like Roman Holiday.  I mean we all expect happy endings, but sometimes that just can’t be as in Roman Holiday.  Then there’s the episode of Gossip Girls entitled Roman Holiday. Can you figure out why?

I was glad to find that the entire movie was filmed in Rome and had actual Italians.  A lot of times old movies just try passing people off… And I can glad say that I’ve been to some of the places showed in the film like the coliseum and the mouth of truth.

The Blood of Flowers

July 29, 2008 at 10:59 pm (books) (, , , , , , )

I really enjoyed the book, The Blood of Flowers by  Anita Amirrezvani. This story that takes place in the 17thcentury Persia was powerfully written.  The narrator who is never named (in tribute to a tale) struggles to both find herself and survive in a world that doesn’t have a place for women as individuals.  A woman is not expected to have anything or be anything without a male relation. When her father dies her world changes to the worse. Amirrevani  inter-weaves tales written like and based on spoken aloud ones into the story like the rugs that narrator so admires.

The narrator, who as I mentioned before is not named, realizes in the story that her name will never be put on a rug to be remembered for all time, but that her rug will be remembered and make people happy who have them.  This is the story of many women, but the narrator is the rare person who realizes her own significance although people keep suggesting otherwise.

It took the author nine years to write this book and I’m glad she stuck with it.  I definitely recommend this book.  It is full of the depth, beauty, and contradictions of Iran.

New Moon and Eclipse

July 20, 2008 at 8:06 pm (books) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I finally got book two from the library in the Twilight series so I went ahead and read that one and the third because I had already gotten it from the library.  Book two was losely framed around Romeo and Juliet, while the third was framed around Wuthering Heights.  It kind of reminded me of Wuthering Heights. I didn’t like the characters in the book, but the book was still awesome and is one of my favorites.  And although I didn’t like either Catherine or Heathcliff I still wanted them to be together.

To get back to the Twilight series Isabella Swan annoyed me to no end.  She was so clumsy to the point where I was wondering Is this for real?, because even I was never that bad and it was like she had a death wish or something.  Also she could not live without her love, Edward Cullen, because there was nothing else in her life in her mind.  But I did like Edward and Jacob Black.  I just wish Bella could see her own life worth.  I guess that’s why I found her annoying.  She was likeable though and I guess this book shows the power of first person narrative. I got to see what Bella thought of herself more so than what others thought.

It still managed to be a good book.  I could really see it as a shojo manga though. People would really flip over that.  It’s kind of similar to Vampire Knight in a way, but without some of the things that I found were distasteful in that.

I may not have liked the main character, but that didn’t stop me from reading all three of the books and enjoying them.  And seeing that Stephenie Meyer has a new book with another on the way I think I’ll be checking them out.

The Dark Knight

July 20, 2008 at 7:54 pm (movies) (, , , , , , , )

I thought the Dark Knight was awesome.  I had gone to see it on Saturday because I knew it would be crowded and hard to get a good spot on the first day. I had read the Richmond  Times Dispatch critic’s review before going and it said that there was an extra 30 minutes attached to the end that almost ruined the movie, but I didn’t see it there. I did look for it, but I guess they didn’t like two face or something.  I thought that the last minutes tied up the movie nicely.

Heath Ledger made a good joker.  I’m glad the hype was not for nothing.  He was simultaneously funny and scary and totally insane.  The Joker did not make one sane sound or movement.  The way he got under everyone’s skin reminded me of Benjamin Linus on Lost who I think is really creepy, but not as creepy as the joker proved to be. Linus had motives that people understand while the Joker was only interested in Mayhem.

This is one of the better movies based on a comic.  It’ll make you both laugh and cringe.  So if you haven’t seen it already go ahead.

Movies woo!

July 13, 2008 at 9:11 pm (movies) (, , , , , )

Summer is a good time to watch movies and catch up on some stuff.  Here’s what I watch recently:

Juno Good.  So many people said it and I finally got to see it and it proved to be good.

10,000 BC Kind of reminded me of a non gory Apocalypto without so many subtitles. It was really good and had a fantasy/sci fi twist that involved people from a land that sank (Atlantis?).

Vantage point So everyone in this movie was superman.  So many people got hit by cars and then got right back up. I find that hard to believe. Besides this and the fact that there was no explanation or motivation for the terrorists actions it was a good movie.

Superbad Like the critics said funny but with plenty of foul language. And more people getting hit by cars and then getting right back up. Good music helps too.

Guitar!

guitar

I went out and bought a guitar, amp, and a few other things for it the other day.  It cost a small fortune, but I’m happy.  I got a Mexican made Fender Statocaster and its black and white like the one in the photo.  I’m currently learning my chords and notes. Can’t play any worthwhile songs yet but I will someday.

As a child I never liked music class…so this all seems kind of strange to me.  Maybe it was that I never got to play the instrument that called the most to me.  I mean the recorder or one of those band instruments don’t even come close to the type of sound of the guitar. Not to say that orchestras are not assume, because they are.  It’s just that I guess that’s not the type of music I wanted to play (not that I really had an interest in playing music).   I kind of used to wish to get out of those classes as fast as possible. I kind of regret it now, because I have learn all that music stuff now, even though now I enjoy.  So people can and do change.  I’m proof of that.

Well I’m going to be working on 100 top guitar songs, because I wasn’t happy with the Rolling Stone’s list as were a lot of people.  If you have any suggestions please list them.

Twilight

July 2, 2008 at 2:27 am (books) (, , , , , , , , )

I just finished reading the book Twilight.  I can see why its such a popular teen book.  It’s got a girl stuck in a situation she doesn’t want to be in (namely living in and going to school in a place she knows she hates), forbidden love (shouldn’t fall in love with someone who’s not even your own species), vampires, trouble(lot’s of it).  The guy Bella loves is kind of scary (he’s a vampire I guess he can’t help it) so he’s kind of got this bad boy image, but he’s really good at heart which makes it ok. And of course he’s really hot.  Now I’m going to go wait for the second book to come in on hold at the library. I’m curious to see how this turns out.  Of course the third book came in on hold before the second, but I’m not going to peek or read ahead although I’m sorely tempted and to speak of temptation a girl’s hands are holding an apple on the cover…hmm….Well it’s a really good book and a really good vampire book (a lot of them aren’t good but this one is).
