Reading Japanese Manga

January 19, 2008 at 6:32 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , )

Well I’m attempting to read a manga in Japanese. I’ve read one in Japanese before. It was Ayashi no Ceres by Yuu Watase, but for some reason that one was much easier to read than toraware no minoue by Hino Matsuri who is also the mangaka of Vampire Knight and Meru Puri.  If I was reading her other works it would be easy to find a translation and check to see how much I understand, but I have the feeling that Americans don’t know about this manga as well (I for one hadn’t heard of it before until I got the manga that is).  The manga is pretty good, but I think it doesn’t appeal to Americans as much as the other ones.

Toware no minoue means something similar to captive hearts.  In the manga, a family has served a rich family for generations because of a curse.  A girl from the rich family moves to China where she is the only survivor of some accident.  Years later she returns home where there is a boy from the servant family.  The boy, because of the curse, calls her a princess and is forced to treat her like one.  Does love ensue even though the boy has to treat her so well and has no control over that? Of course it does, but I haven’t gotten to that part yet.                                                                  toraware no minoue

Well here’s a picture of the cover.  The artwork is beautiful as it always is for Hino Matsuri.

Hey,

Well this is the last page in my short little manga. I hope to get good enough to enter the Morning International Manga Competition (MIMC) contest and the rising stars of manga contest at Tokyo Pop. Really good work has been submited in both competitions.   I may try to enter the rising stars contest this year if I can get someone else to work with me.  I also have a lot of improving to go through.

Back to school and page 4

January 14, 2008 at 9:02 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , )

Hey,

I’m back to school (because I am a college student).  This semester looks like its going to be busy.  I’m definitely not going to be able to post my own art work up everyday.  I’ll try putting it up as often as possible and seeing that I’m not an art student I don’t have time to draw everyday. I’m actually a Government and East Asian studies major.

Well I hope you like my short manga.  So far its the best one I’ve done (I’ve done several others. 2 that end and 3 that haven’t so far and to think I’m planning on working on a another one.  Maybe I should just finish one that I’ve started first.)

Learned Alot

January 13, 2008 at 6:16 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , )

I learned alot from working on this manga. I learned how to use photoshop better.  I can do speed lines and fill in backgrounds.  My next manga is going to be even better because of this.  I was supposed to start another one doing winter break but I never got to it, because I was so busy designing clothes and I kind of got lazy too.  Drawing a manga is not too bad, but completing one (no matter how short) takes alot more work.  There’s inking, shading, text of course and clean up.  I’m not the neatest drawer in the world so cleaning the drawing up takes some time.

Never Heard of Black Sun, Silver Moon?

January 12, 2008 at 6:49 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , )

Black Sun, Silver Moon by Tomo Maeda is about a boy named Taki Juhas (Does the name sound vaguely familiar? like Judas from the Bible.) Anyways this boy as the oldest of ten has the responsiblity of paying off family debts by cleaning for the Church.  There he finds that he’s not just cleaning with brooms and mops.  There is something more sinister that needs to be cleaned, namely zombies and he is to do this with the help of the priest, Shikimi.  And of course things happen all along the way that get in the way of removing these zombies.

Here’s page two of my fan manga.

Yet another contest

January 11, 2008 at 8:08 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

In November I entered a contest in which I had to draw a manga.  It was a doujinshi (or fan comic) for the manga Black Sun, Silver Moon.  I never read the manga, but by looking at the art and reading the story line I managed to draw a doujinshi.  I was a finalist in the competition so I won a few prizes and got my work displayed at the New York Anime Festival. I couldn’t go see my work display which would have been nice, because I don’t live in New York and I wasn’t going to travel up there in the middle of December.

My Doujinshi turned out to be five pages and a cover page.  I admit the cover is a piece of crap, because that is the first and only picture I’ve started and  finished on photoshop, but I can guarantee that the rest of my little manga is not.

Page one is below.  I’ll be posting the rest little by little.

Shojo Beat Contest

January 10, 2008 at 9:49 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Hey,

A part of my contest fever was entering every contest featured in the December issue of Shojo Beat.  Most of the contests are basically drawing type and based solely on luck.  I entered all of them with the hopes of winning at least one.  One of the contests required me to design an outfit in order to win two complete outfits from the Japanese Gothic Lolita company Baby.

The outfit I designed is below.  Of Course the outfit is in the Gothic Lolita stlye.  It has to be dark and cute.  I drew a lot of lace to give it a flowing flowery feel.  Also the shirt collars are based on kimono. The jacket is essentially a military jacket while the shirt design was based on a corset. I used pink, because its cute and black because its supposed to be gothic. Tell me what you think.

Contest Fever

January 9, 2008 at 8:58 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , )

For the past month I’ve had contest fever.  I’ve also gotten those around me to participate.  I’ve entered a lot of contests and won things here and there. The contest I entered most recently was for Vans in which I had to design a shoe.  It was due not too long ago, so I still don’t know how I did.  The first place winner gets a new mac computer, a 500 dollar shopping spree for Vans, and their design goes on a shoe.  The runners up get a shoe with the winner’s design.

Here’s the shoe design I entered:

The theme of the shoe is music.  I put music notes on the side, a person listening to music on the front, and head phones in the back (although you can’t really see them).  I’m afraid that the person may look too much like the people in the itunes commercial.  What do you think?

Hello world!

January 9, 2008 at 1:12 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , )

Hi,

I’m Kagehime from the William and Mary Comics blog.  I decided to blog on my on as while as with the comics club.  I’ve found that blogging is addictive so I made a personal blog.  Here I can write about myself and post pictures that I draw as well.  I could put pictures on the other site as well, but as seeing that I haven’t so far I doubt I will.  I haven’t drawn any pictures that match what I was writing about.

Besides it is more free doing my own blog, than being apart of another.  Although its going to get hard writing for two blogs considering that I am a full time student. Because I’m still on winter break I have the illusion of free time.

Kagehime

Since this is my own blog I can do silly stuff like this:

This is a picture of Harhi Suzumiya where I changed her expression and the color of her jacket from red to purple
